After every conflict, there comes a time when historians gather to describe the heroic exploits stemming from that action. In the case of Victoria Cross winners, such histories are ordinarily detailed and numerous, but there are some exceptions.

In the forty years since the end of the Vietnam War, not one book of note has commemorated the heroism of one of Australia’s greatest soldiers: Ray Simpson, VC, DCM.
Not until now.

Historians and fellow soldiers Michael J Malone, OAM and Peter Lutley have spent over five years of research, writing, and interviewing those closest to the great man to complete Simmo, the definitive, authorised biography of this fascinating hero.

Ray Simpson is one of those special heroes, a ‘double gallantry’. Many men have won the Victoria Cross but few have won a second gallantry award. He is the most decorated Australian soldier of the Vietnam War.
Malone and Lutley have interviewed those who knew Simmo, to share their stories and to piece together the minutiae of his varied and surprising life. Told in the words of those who lived and served with him, this is a substantial, gritty, and candid collection of anecdotes that illustrates the many facets of this larger than life man. To compliment the many interviews they have trawled the system and produced hundreds of files and documents which add the flesh to the bones of the man.

An intensely brave soldier and never-say-die character in the mould of WW1 heroes Albert Jacka, VC, MC and Bar and Joe Maxwell, VC, MC and Bar, DCM, Ray Simpson served in World War 2, Korea, and Malaya, as well as five decorated years in Vietnam. He was a WO2 and loved being one.

Simmo is arguably the most substantial and comprehensive biography ever written of one man who was not a General.

Welcome to Catalogue #252 May 2022. Since my last list we’ve had some very welcome rain here in the West with the season ‘Djeran’ settled in. Pleasant clear days and cool nights. This a shortened version of my usual offering and I’ve rested Military Biography, Military General, Espionage, Human Endeavour, Naval and Napoleonic. I thought I...

Welcome to Catalogue #251, April 2022. The Noongar season of Bunuru (hot summer) continues here in Perth although there are signs of respite (Djeran). Rain is a long forgotten memory here and when ‘the weather breaks’, I hope we don’t cop it like the east coast in recent times. The news is still filled with ‘Putin atrocities’ in Ukraine....

Welcome to Catalogue 250 – March 2022. It’s still blisteringly hot here in lovely Perth with very little respite in sight. It’s the Noongar Aboriginal ‘hot’ summer (Bunuru) which will last through much of March. We can then look forward to cooler weather (Djeran). The news is chock-a-block with Vladimir Putin and his intemperate and stu...

Welcome to list #249, the first of 2022. Bit hard to get one out after the ‘festivities’ of Christmas and the new year. I’ve always held off with a January list because ‘most’ people have run out of sheckles after the over-indulgences of the festive season. It also gives us a chance and kick back and watch the cricket (4 nil by the...

Ah, Christmas beckons! And our gift to you is this quite large list offered at LESS 20%. Welcome to Catalogue #248 December 2021. Welcome to our November list—#247. This is the penultimate offering for 2021 and as we slide towards Christmas, we look back on what has been a tumultuous year. Welcome to list #244, August 2021. For various reasons this is a shortened list with various categories given a rest for a month or so. In close analysis, it has been determined that these ‘rested’ categories were attracting little interest, so this month, we would stick to the main areas of interest, ie, WWI and WW2. But rest assured, we will...

Welcome to Catalogue #242—at the onset of winter here in Perth. It’s been a savage summer here in Perth, a season I don’t relish as I get older. When young and fit it’s a glorious season but for us septuagenarians, it’s a real hassle. We got our first serious rain over the last few days which was fantastic. Let’s hope it rains all wint...
